AR Extra was a curated selection of augmented reality artworks from all over the world. This innovative poster exhibition transformed public spaces across Loughborough and Leicester, with artworks installed throughout both town centres, each featuring hidden augmented reality layers that could be unlocked with the Graff.io AR app.
Building on the success of A Window to Reality, AR Extra expanded the concept of accessible digital art by bringing international AR experiences directly to the streets. The project featured carefully selected works from global artists, creating an outdoor gallery that existed simultaneously in physical and digital realms. Visitors could discover these artworks whilst going about their daily routines, transforming ordinary urban environments into spaces of artistic discovery.
Each poster functioned as both standalone artwork and gateway to immersive AR experiences. By pointing their mobile devices at the installations using the Graff.io Arts app, viewers could access additional layers of content including animations, interactive elements, and artist interviews. The project demonstrated how augmented reality could democratise access to contemporary art, removing traditional barriers of gallery spaces and opening up new possibilities for public art engagement.
The exhibition successfully merged international artistic vision with local community access, proving that cutting-edge digital art could be meaningfully integrated into everyday public spaces whilst maintaining the integrity and impact of the original works.
